"The Radius of Us" by Marie Marquardt is a fictional book that offers multiple perspectives into Latino gang violence both here in the U.S and in Central America. The main characters are teenagers who have fled their home countries to escape gang violence, just like many of my students' families have.
Our students are often reluctant readers and my hope is that providing them a fresh and relevant book will spark a love of reading and a positive regard for classic literature such as "The Scarlet Letter" and "Of Mice and Men".
Engagement strategies will include debates, writing, socratic seminars, class discussions and reading circles.
