Master writing workshop teachers have emphasized the importance of creating a separate space for students to gather to begin the lesson each day. Having students group together, typically on the floor, helps build community, while also delineating when students are supposed to pay attention to the key minilesson of the day and when they are set free to take up their important writing work. A colorful, inviting rug on the floor welcomes them to the classroom and grabs their attention and focus. They know that when they are in that space, they are learning important writing strategies that they can add to their lifetime repertoire of writing skills. It also breaks up classroom monotony by allowing students to move around the room, while also giving them clear expectations and a daily routine.
