I want to provide a means for my Latino students to recognize themselves, their families, and their stories in the books they read. It is equally important to my other students to be exposed to books that explore different cultures, as well.
Students will expand their understanding of the immigration experience and serial migration (separation between children and parents in order to facilitate immigration). After reading Across a Hundred Mountains, a stunning story of migration, loss, and discovery, students will have to interview a foreign-born adult (male or female) who was separated from their family due to immigration and write their responses in narrative form.
