My students are mostly from families that are below the poverty level. Currently 100% of the student population receive free lunch and approximately 5% are classified as homeless. Because of this, many of my students do not have access to computers or the internet at home. This limits their access to resources to complete homework and creates barriers to learning. It also limits the type of learning activities I can plan. Project based assignments that required students to research information independently are a hardship for my students because they lack the proper resources at home and have no way to travel to libraries in the community. Despite their challenges, my students amaze me by the resilience they display daily. They are proof that when students are given opportunity and support, they respond positively in developing social/ emotional and cognitive skills.
