I teach sixth grade in an inner-city school in Worcester, Massachusetts. I have a sunny, compact room in a historic former high school that was designed for lecture and slate board style teaching.
Most of my students qualify for free lunch. Many of them are English Language Learners. Their academic levels range across all six grades. Many of them face many serious challenges at home and at school. In addition, they face the normal challenges of growing up that all pre-teens face.
They are diverse in many ways, but my students are similar in their eagerness to discover themselves and their world. They want to challenge and be challenged. They want to be empowered to make changes to their neighborhoods and their world.
My mandate as a teacher is to empower these students by providing opportunities for them to discover themselves and others, and to educate them to be able to empower themselves.
