Navigating the path towards college is difficult, even more so for students determined to become a first generation college student. My students have dreams of going to college and pursuing a variety of careers; this is where the AVID elective course supports, challenges, and guides students through four years of high school. AVID is an acronym which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination; this is a true representation of my students as they come from diverse backgrounds but are all determined to achieve their dreams. The AVID elective course incorporates strategies to support students as they take challenging honors and Advanced Placement classes; students analyze, research, write, organize, discuss, debate, and collaborate in study sessions called tutorials. Additionally, students learn about college, career, and community as they research, visit, and meet individuals from various colleges and careers.
