Reading is a skill learned at a young age and first taught through simple picture books. When children first open these books, their eyes open wide with amazement and they can’t wait to begin reading. As children get older, books get longer and reading becomes a requirement, not a hobby. By the time students reach middle school, they have been forced to read books that aren’t of any interest and so their love of reading is gone.
I will use these books to reintroduce my students to the love of reading. I will also use these books to help students better understand basic literary elements such as plot, conflict, and character. A lot of times, older students have trouble understanding the basic pieces of reading comprehension and literacy because they find the books too difficult, boring, or they have simply lost their passion for reading. By showing students that the books they fell in love with as young kids can have the same concepts as more advanced books, they will have the opportunity to see that reading is still a FUNdamental skill!
