My students have spent the year focusing in on Latin American culture through a variety of assignments, projects, games, activities, and art projects. Be it setting up a mock UN, putting on a fashion show all in Spanish, studying famous latin@s, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, building piñatas for Navidad, decorating altars during DÃa de los Muertos, or critiquing artworks by famous latin@ artists.
Going into the 2nd semester now, I would love to conduct a book study on "The House on Mango Street" which depicts a young girl's experience of growing up in a latino immigrant community plagued by racism, sexism, poverty, and other forms of oppression. Working in the inner city, I believe this book study will be an excellent choice to highlight latino culture and the accompanying challenges here in the USA as well as give my student's an opportunity to voice their stories and reflect on their identities in the neighborhoods that they live in.
