Imagine being told you have to sit in a hard chair for 7 hours a day. Your knees hit the top of the desk, you fill cramped, there is someone sitting so close to you, you can feel them breathe. Now imagine you are 8 or 9. This is what my 3rd graders experience on a daily basis. WHO COULD LEARN THAT WAY! Yes, we could say, well I did 20 years ago, but come on, we've made a lot of advancements in the world in the past 20 years, it's time to do the same for the classroom. What these kids need is to move!!! That's why I'm looking at flexible seating. This means I'd like to give them an option on where and how they sit and keep them engaged while they are learning.
I want to use balance balls, wobble stools, and wobble cushions to give my students a chance to wiggle while they learn! There are plenty of studies that prove that even a little more room to move helps students stay focused on their work, and isn't that what we all want?
