As an educator, I firmly believe that student success is strongly dependent upon the learning environment. Providing a learning environment that is calm and conducive to peer collaboration can keep students be engaged throughout the day and allow them to reach their greatest potential.
Flexible seating provides the opportunity for students to focus in a calm and collaborative learning environment. I teach in a high poverty school with students that often seek a calm and quiet place to learn. These flexible seating areas have become crucial to providing a calm place for them to feel safe to learn. It is important to remember the social/emotional needs that these kiddos desire in order to feel successful in the classroom!
In addition to this, flexible seating has been a motivator for reading! Even the most reluctant readers enjoy moving to a calm and comfortable spot in the classroom to read a book! Motivation is crucial, as poverty often correlates to literacy deficits. Unfortunately, I purchased my old rugs, pillows, etc, as a first year teacher and my students have already given these items a lot of love!
The items I've requested include a new reading carpet and bean bags. The reading carpet provides a place for students to work closely with one another during reading lessons and feel a greater sense of community within the classroom. My students love coming together for a story during carpet time! Bean bags are also used for independent reading, group work, and as a calming tool for struggling learners. I hope for my students to be able to learn in an environment that best meets their needs! Thank you so much for your support!
