This year, I am planning to incorporate kinesthetic learning or learning by touch in mathematics. In order to do so, students need to be able to see the math subjects of fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, and data analysis. Students will have the opportunity to use the math cart for a variety of activities, such as exploring how fractions are used in cooking or how decimals dictate monetary transfers.
Research shows that kinesthetic learning is a natural match for mathematics because math is founded on creativity, which kinesthetic learning is all about (Sinha, 2014). By obtaining the mobile math cart, my students can be better prepared for using math in the real world. Students will become engaged in mathematics and realize that math is much more than rote memorization of facts and procedures.
