This year, I was asked to bring an elective to our middle school students. In thinking about my own skills and what the students need developmentally, I arrived at the desire to bring them a deeper understanding of art and the history of art. Sydney Gurewitz Clemens, an educator, once said, 鈥淎rt has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else.鈥 I believe that through studying artists from around the world, the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at my school could use their creativity to produce beautiful works of art as individual as they are. The paints, paper, brushes, and other resources we receive will allow us to study a diverse group of artists from various cultures and time periods through artistic expression. Without the help of generous donors, we cannot afford even the most basic supplies for this class. Please help me provide my students with the supplies that we need for a successful art program.
