My third graders are curious, creative, and hungry for knowledge. They are avid readers, writers, and mathematicians who come to school each day excited to learn. They are resilient and dedicated learners who embody a level of joy that inspires me constantly. My classroom is full of diversity, with students who have recently moved to Oakland from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Yemen as well as students whose family histories go back to the early development of Oakland as a city.
Think College Now is a Title I public elementary school in the Fruitvale community of Oakland. 57% of our school's students are English-language learners. 95% of students are at or near the poverty line, receiving subsidized or reduced-price lunches. All of our students are brilliant and inspiring young people with a world of opportunity ahead of them.
