Schenectady City School District "has the 13th highest concentration of childhood poverty in the nation." Living in poverty has tremendous affects on the wellbeing of our students. Many of our students have witnessed or experienced trauma and some are still experiencing it RIGHT NOW. Adding these mindfulness tools into our classroom will assist the students who do not have support in their life to work through their trauma. These tools will help students self-monitor their behaviors, build trusting relationships, and regulate their own emotions.
By integrating these mindfulness tools into the classroom, students will learn to better self regulate their emotions and open their minds. Mindfulness assists students in becoming resilient by positively helping students cope with the trauma that they have witnessed and experienced. Mindfulness will build their tolerance, build plasticity in the brain, attunement, and foster autonomy within themselves and the school. These tools will give my students the assistance they need to know that they are safe and that they will be able to get through what life has thrown at them.
