I work in an Affective Needs program (Special Education). All my kids have social/emotional challenges that limit their ability to be in a general education setting. Each one of my kids are on Individuals Education Plans (IEP). They all have goals that must be met/improved, in order for them to re-enter their home classroom.
Working with Affective Needs kids can be very challenging, but rewarding. Students who struggle to manage their behavior may have moment that result in them becoming defiant. Luckily, I have a sensory room that kids can go to collect themselves. Kids who have social/emotional problems, struggle to communicate what is bothering them. It could be as simple as the bright lights hurt their eyes and it is making it hard for them to work. Our classroom has grown into a very successful program. All of our students are increasing the time they spend in general education classroom! We create greatness!
