My school has a greenhouse and garden area, but no equipment! The goal of the learning garden is to provide students with an opportunity to explore, research and solve problems in a non-traditional classroom setting. As the soil is turned, the garden beds are raised and the crops begin to grow, student minds begin to shift from a fixed to a growth mindset.
There is no such thing as a mistake if you are able to learn a lesson from it. The learning garden starts from the ground up. Students will use shovels to dig trenches for the foundation of a raised garden bed. Once the 4 rough cut 2X4's have been laid into the trenches, the shovels will be used to turn the existing soil in the beds and to add organic matter throughout the year. The rakes will be used to form rows in the ground plots. The digital scales will be used to measure nutrients and fertilizer ingredients. Oftentimes, fertilizer trials will vary by grams of an ingredient, and it is important to make sure that each test group has precisely the same amount. The soil tests will measure the nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous in the soil. Supplemental curriculum provided by Nutrients for Life will measure and test understanding of soil fertility. If there is a sufficient crop, it will be donated to school cafeteria to provide a meal to the student body. If the crop not plentiful, the students will have a day to enjoy their harvest in the classroom.
