In the past, I have made my own flexible seating by sewing pillows, cutting wood, adding padding and fabric, buying bouncy balls in the dollar spot but unfortunately my materials have not lasted due to lack of funds to buy durable materials. With this project, I will be able to offer my students flex-space brand options that is durable and made to last seating that will allow students an opportunity for choice and progress in academics for years to come. "Classrooms that are student-centered are successful." I have observed the power of this work. In the last two years, with my self-funded flexible seating, I have given my students a choice in our classroom. I have seen how flexible seating has given my students the ability to feel in control of their learning and of their bodies. They are able to prove themselves and have confidence in making successful choices. This aids in the development of self-regulation. I am also the inclusion special education teacher for the grade level and I have noticed my identified special education students feel more welcomed, comfortable, and they notice that they are not alone when needing modifications or changes to be more successful in the classroom. I want to provide my students with a better choice of seating that is safe and will last over time; the flex-space comfy couch, flex-space wobble chairs, flex-space big beanbags, flex-space wobble cushions and flex-space balance balls will make this possible.
