Flexible seating offers students a choice in their learning spaces during independent and small group learning times in the classroom. Last school year, I implemented flexible seating for the first time with a class and we experienced many positives with it. Most importantly, students were more engaged in their learning as a direct result of giving them the voice and choice. I want to offer flexible seating to my next incoming class of third graders because I truly believe it is extremely beneficial to their learning. Last year, I was able to offer kick bands, chair cushions, crate seats, plastic rocker chairs, and yoga balls. Students loved all of them, but some of them were loved too much and are unable to be used again and some of them were not designed for a learning environment. I am hoping that these new choices will be more durable and last for many years to come. After doing my own research and talking with fellow colleagues, I have revised the flexible seating choices and added a few new ones: wobble stools, bean bag chairs, balance balls and wobble cushions.
