Every year my students create a journal that specializes in creating and editing literacy strategies and grammatical rules. Instead of just memorizing rules of grammar and writing, my students actually create examples in order to apply these strategies/skills. They also use these materials in a collaborative "literature team" as they analyze and create this journal. At the end of the year, the students take their reading journals/portfolios to 6th grade a reference guide when writing reports in Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Critical Thinking. I tie in the technology by having students write in their journals as they record information that is being researched via Ebooks and internet. It is my way to tie in old school writing/communication with new age technology. The journal I asked for is the backbone of the project. It is used to store all the information the year. The pencils, pens, markers. and copy paper are the materials to help the students create their journal pages like the following: charts, graphs, visuals, notes from research, and notes taken within their group.
