This is my first year of teaching ever. I am super excited to get into my classroom, and start building connections with my students. But before I can jump into the new year, I need to figure out my classroom supplies.
Our classroom is made up of students with learning and emotional disabilities, whose needs are not met in a general education classroom. Our class serves students with a range of disabilities including, but not limited to, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language, emotional disturbance, and intellectual disabilities. At Lakeshore Elementary we are proud to be one of the most ethnically and economically diverse schools in San Francisco.
As a first year teacher, I want to make sure I have the appropriate materials to meet all my students’ unique needs. This includes having alternative ways to access the curriculum. For example, having a clear morning routine, aided by the calendar and schedule chart, will help my students with autism spectrum disorders. As well, my students with speech and language disabilities, and my English Language Learners, will benefit from a complete leveled reading library. I am beyond grateful for your help in making my classroom a joyful and accessible environment.
