In my classroom, I provide direct instruction in math in small group settings. All of my students have individualized math goals. Math manipulatives give my students an opportunity to work on math skills in a hands-on and engaging way. As students become familiar with newly introduced skills, math centers are used to reinforce math concepts. Math centers are an excellent way for students to engage in math activities during independent work.
I will be using the math center activities for comparing numbers, elapsed time, number line tools, beginning multiplication skills, algebraic thinking, and understanding fractions as a way to reinforce math skills being taught in a small group setting. I will use the centers as part of my direct instruction. As the students become familiar with the centers they will be used as part of their independent math activities.
The ultimate goal of my project is to provide my students with opportunities to gain repeated practice through center activities as they learn new math skills.
