Middle school years are pivotal in a student's development. They serve as a major factor in who they will become as they grow and mature. Because hormones are raging and friendships are growing and changing, students often fail to balance school and life. Learning becomes a challenge and often takes a back seat to other issues. It is important for me as a teacher to help my students to find every way they can to be successful. One way to do that is to teach them ways to take control of their learning.
Flexible seating options in my classroom will create a way for students to begin to take control of their learning.
Sitting still and lecturing is no longer relevant to today's students. By offering many different seating arrangements and accommodations using sit/stand desks, adjustable lap desks, flex bands, etc. students will find how they learn best.
For example, reading is a struggle every day for a lot of students, having adjustable laptop trays in my classroom will allow students to move away from traditional seating and group together in an environment where they feel is best for them. The ottomans and foot rests can allow a group of students to work together with open space rather than desks which divide them. In turn this will give students less visual obstacles and entice them to collaborate freely. The sets of dry erase boards can be used in many ways, I could use them for review games, vocabulary practice and any other idea I might stumble across. The bouncy bands can be used by students who work well at a desk but feel the urge to wiggle around. The movement with their feet can allow them to concentrate on what they are learning a discussing.
