The newly released graphic novel of George Takei's life in a Japanese Internment camp during World War II here in America. They Called Us Enemy, will not only help my students understand the injustices that the Japanese Americans suffered during this time period, but will also help them understand how to use their own voice to right wrongs.
Studies show that graphic novels can help improve reading comprehension since students can encode more easily, and this graphic novel is no exception. Since students in my Social Injustice Holocaust class are of varying levels of reading, this type of novel will engage all reading abilities and allow them to understand this event in our past that has only recently led to full acknowledgement by the United States government of the injustices suffered by this group.
Since George Takei is also a famous actor from Star Trek, students will be engaged with the material right away when they learn of his past and his role in speaking out about this time in history.
