Many students who live in urban areas never get to explore the great outdoors. Thankfully, my school has an outdoor classroom that incorporates a creek that I plan on taking my students to once a month. We will be investigating the quality of the water in our creek and analyzing how possible sources of pollution can impact the quality. We will study the connections between chemistry and our real lives. With situations like the lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan occurring, it is important for my students to recognize how science plays a role in their real lives. The environmental back pack is a water quality kit for teachers that will allow us to do testing all year long. It contains water quality testing for dissolved oxygen, turbidity, phosphate and nitrate ions. The collapsible dippers will enable my students to reach out into the creek to get a viable sample.
By donating to my project, you will help to engage the next generations scientists in the fight to protect our planet. This opportunity will bring much needed critical thinking, long-term planning and graphical analysis skills to my students in a fun and engaging way.
