I am the school counselor at Rockwood and work with all grades from Pre-K to 5th grade. The students and the school are situated in an area of the city that is considered high poverty. The dominate race for the school is Hispanic and African American. Despite the circumstances in which they live the children come to school daily prepared to learn and the school for many of them serves as a place of refuge. This is the first year that the school has had a full time counselor and it is my job to teach students the importance of various character traits that will allow them to break the cycle of poverty that so many of them come from. In addition to classroom guidance many of the students are victims of trauma so individual counseling is an important aspect of their intellectual growth.
