At J. L. many students look forward to participating in our local Battle of the Books program as well as the school principal's lunchtime reading club. Both school programs are modeled after the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB), which is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program.
Book Battles and reading clubs encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, help broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students (oregonbattleofthebooks.org).
Having multiple copies of each title on the OBOB selected reading list ensures our school has enough books for many teams to participate in book battles and lunchtime reading clubs that prepare them for participation in the state-wide competition. Without the books on this list, students will not be able to apply their local battle and club efforts toward the statewide OBOB program.
