Many of my students are from low-income families, which means that traveling out of state to museums or science exhibits is simply out of the question. We live in a rural area of Southern Illinois where access to real life, hands-on science activities is extremely limited. Most students in my school only have one place to explore and investigate science, and that's at school!
These supplies will allow to me to open up the world of physical science to my curious young learners. The supplies I have requested will provide almost all of what is needed for a 16 lesson unit on light and sound waves. It will include many chances for students to explore, observe, question, investigate, and solve problems. Students will be asked to use the scientific method to solve human problems with various research and engineering tasks.
The flashlights (and batteries) will be used to study light waves and investigate through what forms of matter can light travel most easily. The wax paper and aluminum foil will assist by creating translucent and opaque filters. The safety goggles will be used for any project in this, or subsequent units, that requires eye protection, such as when we make slime and investigate if sound waves can cause matter to visibly move. During the same experiment, students will use tuning forks to create sound waves, The pipettes will be used to add liquid food coloring in a controlled way to the slime as we investigate various states of matter. The mirrors will be used to direct rays of light in various directions as the students are challenged to create a method of communication using only rays of light.
