"I used to not do my homework before having Ms. R."
"Before Ms. R's reading class, I was angry.
"Last year I was in and out of in-school suspension. This year is totally different because Ms. R and her books have helped me understand it. It's man vs. self. I'm the one who is in charge of my behavior. No one else."
These are just a few of the responses I got from students as we sat and talked about their lives before being in my colleague's reading class. For many years, this reading class has helped angry, depressed, and lost students. I have seen first hand the positive transformation these kids go through because of the books given to them. These books are full of characters and situations that so many students can relate to and make connections to help them overcome personal challenges in and out of school.
Because of the success I have seen in this reading class, I believe it is necessary that I do my best to emulate the culture and the books in my own class. These books are an excellent foundation to get reluctant readers engaged and prepare them for challenging books in the future.
