Choose Kind! is the first class expectation that students recite daily. These two words were taken from R.J. Palacio's best selling novel Wonder. They are there to remind students that kindness is a choice and when given the choice they should always choose to be kind.
In today's world students are constantly exposed to negativity regarding diversity, so I find that it is important for students to go through their day knowing that choosing to be kind is a deliberate action that makes this world a better place. Wonder is a wonderful way to start a discussion about kindness. It allows for open dialogue about how students are being treated by their peers, how they feel about themselves, and how they treat others. The book celebrates "different" and teaches kids that they are wonderful just as they are. This book is a great tool for supporting an inclusive and kind classroom environment.
The reading and study of this book will help students analyze literature concepts such as theme, provide ample opportunities for academic discussion, and foster socioemotional development.
Please help my students this year and beyond to "Choose Kind!" We would greatly appreciate your support.
