Many of my students come from generational poverty and have never had the counting, math and science experiences many of us grew up with and take for granted. They may not have counted steps or built a block castle.
These children need to experience math and science. They need to be able to hold the counters, see word problems in a visual form, see numbers in a ten frame, build a house or a box from blocks, etc. These activities will help form concrete ideas so they can then move to actually applying math and science to their everyday lives.
