Many of my students enjoy painting as a means to relax from their everyday activities. The students who tend to enjoy it the most are those in all honor classes or those with tough home lives. The goal in my classroom is to not only to teach but to provide a way for students to work creatively with their hands and get a break from the book work that they often find themselves doing.
We try to stay after school once a week for art club. During this time, friendships are made while working on improving personal skills. We volunteer in our community to enhance physical spaces. However, their favorite activity is painting. They go through canvases quickly.
We need canvas panels, brayers, brush sets, a lightbox and calligraphy ink. I requested the printmaking supplies because a lot of our rollers have developed flat sides from sitting too long. Printmaking is still relatively new to these students and I hope to inject it as a major project for this year. Specifically, I'd like them to try out linoleum carving and woodcuts, both of which need rollers to apply ink to the printing surfaces.
