My students have a hard time engaging in their learning. They are often so worried about their basic needs, that it is hard to get them to think about anything else. In addition to that, they have a hard time socializing appropriately and being respectful of others and their learning.
Board games that target specific learning goals are just what they need to add some fun to their learning while building social and content skills. Games like Set and Trifacta will build math concepts and fluency. Games like Boggle and Scrabble with build word knowledge. Games like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride will improve their Social Studies understanding. And Games like Somebody Human Anatomy are directly in line with the 6th Grade Human Body targets. They will learn while having fun and building social skills, like following rules, turn taking, patience, and negotiating with each other.
Board games will supplement other teaching tools such as researching, videos, projects, online resources, and worksheets in a way that will bring excitement and engagement to our classroom.
Finally, many of my students have never really gotten the opportunity to play these types of games at home. They just can't afford it when food and rent are a higher priority.
