My students are eager to learn, but often struggle in their reading and writing skills. Using these graphic novels, I want to offer them a unique way to examine and explore both the visual and written history of World War I. The Harlem Hellfighters by Max Brooks is a perfect way to do just that!
The Harlem Hellfighters graphic novel offers an opportunity for my students to discover an African-American regiment in WWI who faced both discrimination and the evils of war, but overcame those obstacles to become one of the most decorated outfits in WWI. This multi-cultural component offers a perspective of the Great War so often neglected throughout US & World History.
As a part of this graphic novel project, students will be able to follow characters through the graphic novel and create some of their own graphic novel panels to illustrate the emotions, struggles, and triumphs these men faced before, during, and after WWI.
