Often times, people of color are represented in ways that are not accessible to children; whether it's on the news, reality television or in sports/entertainment. Being able to choose a book with characters that look like them and other underrepresented groups is going to be empowering! My students will use these books to build their reading stamina, practice fluency, and hopefully, cultivate a love for reading and learning. They will be given time every day to choose a book and read independently. In today's times, students should be exposed to cultures other than the traditional books that fill many of the classroom libraries. I want my students to have books that reflect the world and are up-to-date with the 21st century! I once read a quote, "we lose ourselves in books. We find ourselves there, too." Perhaps, these books will help my students find themselves!
