Hi, my name is Brecken Gnehm, and I teach seventh grade science at a junior High school in Murray Utah called Hillcrest Junior High. I will soon be starting my second year of teaching. As many of you know, science can be thought of as somewhat boring for students if the right supplies aren鈥檛 available in the classroom. Last year, during my first year of teaching, my goal was to break down their misconceptions that science can鈥檛 be fun and to show them that science rocks (pun intended).
This year we were given new standards that are more interactive and thought-provoking for students. While this is exciting that students will have the opportunity to learn from experiment-based learning this year, it also comes with extra supplies and expenses. Physics is a new topic in seventh grade this year and can somewhat abstract to students, and will require lots of experiments and demonstrations. Since this is the first time seventh grade will be learning about physics, our team has not had a chance to build the inventory of extracurricular 鈥渢oys鈥 鈽
Our administration is supplying us with the tools we need to teach these new standards, but my goal is to take it to the next level. My goal is to make kids move from learning the concepts to fully understanding them. Some of the supplies I am trying to get for my school will help students understand the laws of physics to create learners that continue to love science long after I teach them.
I went into teaching is to make learning fun and enjoyable for kids while they learn important content that will help guide them in their future careers. I would love to supply my students with extra fun and engaging equipment, so any donation is greatly appreciated!
