My students need engaging reading material about current events that is specifically designed for middle school children. I would love to have Time for Kids, because it is hard to find current events that are age appropriate. I am constantly running copies of articles that I have had to mark out inappropriate things with a dark marker.
My students read a current event on Monday, write about it throughout the week, and discuss in a Socratic discussion on Friday. These articles about current events builds their knowledge in reading, writing, listening, speaking. By reading the articles, they are also strengthening their background knowledge in math, science, and social studies.
