The traditional classroom is not working for our students anymore. How can we truly be student centered if we are telling students to sit a certain way, in a row of desks? This project empowers students to make choices and solve problems in relation to how they learn best. Students will discover what learning environment works best for them. Think of the classroom as your favorite coffee shop or book store. How do you study best? Some may find a desk. Others may find the biggest, comfiest chair.
Research shows that students who are given the opportunity to move in the classroom, burn more calories, improve oxygen flow to the brain, and increase motivation and engagement. Many of my flexible seating options allow for students to make movement in their seats. With less recess, and more rigor in the classroom, this is a valuable tool.
With increased engagement and stamina, I expect student academic achievement to rise. I believe this will be demonstrated on state assessments, as well as formal and informal assessments in the classroom. I also expect a rise in daily attendance.
