The books purchased will be used for independent reading and will be stored on shelves at the front of the room in the class library. Students will see these titles everyday and will be required to complete book talks weekly as a portion of their grade. Research shows that the more accessible the books are to the students, the more likely they will be to pick one and complete it. The goal is to provide my students with a diverse variety of books that helps them with vocabulary, literacy skills, stamina, and so much more. As a community that lives in a border town, there are particular road blocks in regard to language, socio-economic status, access, etc that prevent students from being able to read current, modern, and engaging novels in their free time. They are already exposed to the classics in school, but outside of the required readings, they are not usually provided the type of titles that they enjoy. This project is about accessibility, relevance, and change! Help me get my students reading and enjoying it!
