Last school year was a difficult year for my students due to the restrictions that resulted from the pandemic. Borrowing a book from the school library was difficult because it involved students having to go online, parents to drive them to campus to pick up and return the book, and not having the privilege to browse the library in person. Popular books were hard to reserve and it was difficult for teachers to motivate those students that dislike reading.
My goal as an educator is to provide enjoyable experiences that relate to reading because closing the learning gap is so much easier when both the teacher and student are enjoying the learning process. I have already began adding my own collection of books to my classroom library but I don't have anywhere to put them. A lot of these books I paid for out of my own pocket, and many were also donated to my classroom. As I continue to add to my collection, I will need somewhere to store it; which is why this project includes two bookshelves. By having bookshelves it will be easier for students to browse the collection without having to touch the books while browsing. This is great because it prevents the spread of germs in the classroom and promotes a safer learning environment.
