Students in Strategic Reading at EMS work tirelessly to investigate and explore great works of literature. Your donation will help us purchase copies of this year's text, If You Come Softly by Jacqueline Woodson, and will give students in a high needs school the opportunity to find and challenge themselves through literature. Through careful analysis , students undertake the attentive reading that is at the heart of understanding and enjoying complex works of literature. Students broaden their grasp of literary craft and master the techniques authors use to synthesize character, theme, plot, dialogue, setting, conflict, and language for effective storytelling. Consistent free writes and guided journal prompts build fluency and confidence in writing. As a result, students experiment with self-expression through the written word and experience the power of personal storytelling. In addition, students are challenged to look beyond their own lives and neighborhoods to investigate different identities and cultures, focusing on the immense power that individuals possess in shaping their communities.
