My students are often exposed to glorified or inaccurate images of war through movies and video games. These materials will help us tackle the myths and confront the realities of war: What does war trauma look like on battlefields and on home fronts? What is the true cost of war? What is collective trauma and historical trauma and how does that compare to war? How does class and race tie into the politics of war? What do current day events in Iran have to do with our nation's previous wars? How can we learn from past protest movements to challenge unjust war?
Through a series of creative and reflective writing prompts, we will begin to craft plans for addressing past, current or future trauma in our own lives. The main objective is to leave in June with a sense of personal autonomy in the face of hardships and a strong sense of political duty.
