The raised garden bed will give my kindergarten students the space to start a gardening project and the focus on helping the environment will serve as an empowering lesson about the ways they can make a positive impact through their actions. Students will also learn to care for the caterpillars, conduct research with the life cycle books, use the butterfly rubber stamps to illustrate their expository writing, observe the caterpillars go through metamorphosis and emerge as butterflies, and release the butterflies to our butterfly attracting class flower garden. In addition, the benefits of gardening are backed by research. Gardening helps connects students to nature. Connecting with nature has a calming effect that may help reduce stress and anxiety. Students learn better when stress and anxiety levels are low.
