Almost all of my students are English language learners. Most of my class reads below grade level. Most of the texts we have access to for the whole class aren't culturally relevant to the diverse demographics of my class.
I love to teach reading through shared novels. I read out loud while the students follow along in their own copy of the book. A class set of Becoming Naomi Leon will go a long way in providing my students an opportunity to learn and develop advanced reading skills through reading a shared novel. This gives my lower readers access to the grade level text, while improving everyone's reading skills as they hear someone else read a text fluently.
For many students, this is the first time they have read an entire novel. I find that they are able to identify with the characters, and it is an amazingly rich experience to read it as a class, and bring us closer together.
I am constantly amazed at the advanced reading skills students are able to master by reading this way.
