The Newbery Award book winners would give my students a chance to read award-winning writing and give them a springboard for their own writing. Sometimes it just takes a spark to engage students in a lifelong love of reading and writing. Some of the teacher related skill books would introduce specific skills to help my students become more informed about how writers write. Reading books, such as A Fish in a Tree or Wonder, shares different perspectives and ways that children are different and also the same. It allows children to discuss and share reflections of their own feelings. Seeing my students reading and writing for the joy of it brings a smile to my face.
