Students should have a safe way to access learning materials. In my classroom, the current shelving is 30-40 years old and has wood splinters and is falling apart. I would love to have some new open shelving to display the student's hands-on supplies such as: puzzles, blocks, Legos, tinker toys, and games. This allows the children to make choices about their learning. With the high standards in first grade, the students need a little time each day to be able to choose their activities.
The students should be able to see the classroom supplies and activities available to them. An organized classroom is safer and more appealing to learners.
