My students are some of the most active kiddos! If you were to walk in my room, you would see students in the reading center, on the floor, and even on the rug. I believe in my heart that students learn better when they are allowed to learn in a space that WORKS for them and CATERS to their needs. I have some students who like to stand while they work. Some students like to be able to walk around. Some of my students do their best work in a comfortable space. After speaking with my principal, she suggested having more flexible seating options for my students. I agreed completely! So here we are!!
It's unreasonable to believe that sitting in a desk all day is conducive to student learning and achievement. If I want my students to be excited and ready to learn, I have to be willing to meet their needs! And what they need are places to sit that AREN'T their desks :) I requested a pub table because it will be perfect for my students who like to stand while they work! Because it's adjustable - it will work for all of my students! The lap desks are great because I have students who love to be on the rug but always have to use a clipboard or book to bare down on! Camping chairs will be utilized for group work. Students can arrange the chairs in a circle to improve conversation and also they can be moved from place to place in the room. I usually have students arguing over who gets to use the few pillows that I have, so with this project, I will be able to have flexible choices for ALL of my students.
