In reality, the student population at our school come from a low income, urban area. Many students do not read or have materials readily available at home to read. In my past years as a teacher, I have found that many students find reading to be a chore rather than something that is enjoyable. In second grade, students are establishing a foundation of reading to build upon. This year, my goal is to have my students find a love for reading.
By having a classroom set of Scholastic News magazines, students will be able to read about current events at their grade level. This will help support reading comprehension, text to self connections, and text to world connections. I will use this resource throughout the school year to support students as they grow as a reader. Having a relevant resource in the classroom will help readers of all levels in the class. My hope is to have students have an "ah ha" moment to realize how great reading can be. I want reading in my classroom to be enjoyable for all students. I want to support all my students by having them gain confidence in themselves as life long learners.
