In my classroom I am using collaborative study groups using socratic inquiry. This means that students work in carefully selected groups, and I will be teaching them how to really help each other understand the material. Collaborative study groups allow both the students and me to focus on everyone understanding the process of mathematical problems rather than making sure everyone just can get a correct answer. Some days, this means they are simply working on a textbook assignment and asking each other for help when they are stuck. Other days this will be discovery activities where they have to come up with the mathematical rules.
Being able to successfully work in a collaborative study group is a necessary skill for these students to be college-ready. Because our table space is limited, I need students to have a bound packet of their trimester notes. This will allow students to have more movement to show each other their work and give them the space they need to work successfully. It will also allow my students that miss school consistently to already have the notes outline and eliminate confusion when they return to school.
