These lab kits and supplies are required for the AP section and will also be used as preparatory labs in the freshmen biology classes to increase their depth of knowledge. Engaging students is key so they keep coming to class and wanting to learn more. The Electrophoresis kit will be used during our DNA/Genetics unit for a better understanding of how genetic information is passed along and how resistriction enzymes are used in identification of certain sequences. The Natrual Selection Kit helps students understand how natural selection is a key driving force behind evolution. Students learn using brine shrimp how different salt concentrations select for the "fittest" individuals for that specific environment.
Students learn through many modalities in the classroom but lab is always a fun and effective approach! Many students have not recieved instruction on the lab techniques and know how they will be expected to have for colleges and universities. This class will be a great stepping stone to upper level classes in high school and in college! It's important for students to be competitive in science practices to help increase appeal to universities. Having these lab kits and micropipettes will help students get that edge necessary for admission and will make the transition to a university lab setting a little easier.
