How did you learn math in elementary school? Was is through memorization? Did this serve you well in high school and college math? While there is a place for memorization, I want my students to have a stronger understanding of the "whys" of math, basically a solid foundation! The second graders I have the privilege of working with each day are amazing - resilient and strong in the face of hardship and the quick change we have had in the economy.
Because of a variety of life circumstances for some of the students, academics is not a common language spoken at some homes. The teachers and staff at our school love and care deeply for our students, but we do not have the financial resources to supply all of the materials that research indicates is beneficial for powerful math learning.
